This is an audio recording of Steve Dembo’s breakout presentation, “Storytelling for the YouTube Generation” on March 1, 2013, at the Illinois Computing Educators (ICE) 2013 Conference in Chicago, Illinois. Steve’s presentation (including all the videos he shared) is available on Prezi. The Harlem Shake (ICE13 version) video Steve created at the end of his session is available on YouTube. The official session description was: Every student has a camera in their pocket and easy access to video tools that rival professional movie studios. The question becomes, how do we leverage such tools in the classroom? We will explore non-traditional ways to harness the power of digital storytelling to tap into student creativity throughout the curriculum. By analyzing popular ‘viral’ videos, we will assess what draws us to them, how they were created, and how educators can replicate those same principles and ideas using free technologies. Students live in a remix culture, so we will take inspiration from YouTube videos and demonstrate how they can be remixed for classroom usage!

This podcast is an audio recording of Michael Wesch’s outstanding opening keynote at the 2013 Heartland eLearning Conference in Edmond, Oklahoma, at the University of Central Oklahoma. The title of the talk was, “Think Whatever: The End of Wonder.” Thanks to Michael for granting permission to share this audio recording, along with some recorded videos I included in my text notes for this session. In this presentation, Michael challenges us as educators to help cultivate WONDER in the minds of our students and focus more on encouraging good questions and grappling with issues that matter to students and less about fact recall / knowledge acquisition. The videos I recorded and shared from this session are titled “Visualizing the Last 12,000 Years of Human Questions” and “Story of Seymour Papert and Questions About Sleeping Giraffes.”

Learn how to setup, use and moderate content on a classroom blog to improve student writing skills. A moderated classroom blog can be an ideal platform to use to share announcements, classroom news, and student work for a public audience. In this session we’ll use the free blogging site KidBlog to model the digital facilitation of student writing. We’ll also explore how free blogs on Posterous.com can be used by students to not only share text, but also different kinds of rich media including images, audio and video files.
