Geo-Map projects can provide windows into events, concepts, places and stories which join disparate media elements into a cohesive digital narrative. Geo-Map projects are not just for social studies! Learn in this workshop how to connect reading, writing, real-world math data, science, and more to “place locations” and create engaging project or assignment opportunities for students.” Referenced resources are available on maps.playingwithmedia.com/geo-map.

This podcast is an unedited recording of Wesley Fryer’s workshop on April 5, 2012, “No Edit Audio Podcasting” for Yukon Public Schools. Resources for this session are available on wiki.wesfryer.com/Home/handouts/noedit. Since I shared this workshop last Spring, my thinking has shifted about naming this activity and professional development sessions like this. My preference is now to teach both teachers and students how to create “Narrated Art” as well as “Radio Shows.” Those are both products included in my “Mapping Media to the Curriculum” digital literacy project. (I think it’s best to avoid technical jargon and acronyms when it comes to multimedia communication with teachers, since those terms are more likely to “intimidate rather than invite” teachers to play with media.) Learn more about multimedia communication and digital literacy by reading my eBook, “Playing with Media: simple ideas for powerful sharing.”

This is an audio podcast recording of Wesley Fryer‘s breakout presentation, “Creating Narrated Slideshows and Screencasts,” on August 8, 2012, at theBlackfoot Educational Technology Conference in Missoula, Montana. The official conference session description was: “The ability to create narrated slideshows and screencasts and share them online should be a basic skill for digitally literate learners today. In this session we’ll explore the reasons why “playing with media” (including narrated slideshows/screencasts) is essential for digital literacy development, and discuss why teachers as well as students should be able to create narrated slideshows specifically to teach, learn, and demonstrate content mastery. We’ll view examples of narrated slideshows created by teachers as well as students, and learn about different tools we can use to create and publish these creations online. We’ll discuss the “workflow” for students creating narrated slideshows as a class assignment, either at home or in class using a cart of laptop computers, iPads, or the school computer lab.” Slides and referenced resources are available.
